Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Tagai the Warrior

Tagai was a warrior who came to Earth to fish. Also in his out-rigger canoe were Zugubals, beings who assumed human form when they were on Earth. On one fishing trip they were catching no fish so Tagai, the best of the fishermen, decided to walk on a nearby reef to look for fish. He took a long time and his crew got very hot. They tried diving into the water but decided that the only thing that would cool them down was to drink fresh water, but there was none available. They got so thirsty that drank the supply of water Tagai had stored in coconut shells for the trip. When Tagai returned he killed them all for taking all the water for the trip. Because they were Zugubals, he returned them to the sky in 2 groups. One group became Usal (the Pleiades), the other Utimal (Orion). He was still angry at them, so he banished them to the northern sky, telling them to keep away from him. Whenever they want to visit the eastern sky they must warn Tagai they are coming with thunder and lightning. When he hears this thunder and sees the lightning he moves below the western horizon.
