Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Trees of the Murray-Darling Basin

One of the most widespread eucalypts in Australia is the river red gum Eucalyptus camaldulensis var. camaldulensis, being present throughout mainland Australia in wetlands and along water courses, even in otherwise semi-arid and arid country, dominating the vegetation of the Murray-Darling Basin (Brooker et al., 2002). This is a relatively long-lived tree, reaching ages of 500 - 1000 years (Jacobs, 1955). It is a perennial tree with a single-stemmed large bole up to 45 m in height (Brooker et al., 2002). It usually flowers in late spring or summer, though has been known to flower in June (Brooker et al., 2002).
