Refugia

The desert mountains of Australia perform an important function as refugia, both for flora and fauna, that are relicts of the once forest-covered parts of the now arid central Australia, and also places where permanent available water allows the survival of life from drought stricken surrounding areas which can then repopulate the area after the drought breaks.
